Frequently Asked Questions

What is thai massage?

Thai Massage is the folk bodywork of Thailand that aims to balance energetic movement (lom, or “winds”) along the energy lines (sen) of the body. The practitioner will compress and stretch the body to encourage equilibrium along and across these lines. While most practitioners work with clients fully-clothed on a futon-like mat on the ground, some might also work on a massage table (sometimes called Table Thai) using lotion or oil, guasha-type scraping, cupping, or Thai herbal compresses.

how is thai massage different from table massage?

While some Thai Massage practitioners might practice “Table Thai,” most will work on a futon-like mat on the floor (or slightly elevated on a small platform), with clients fully-clothed in loose-fitting, easily-movable clothing like linens. Practitioners will stretch and compress the client’s body with the hands, knees, feet, elbows, etc. - with the intention of balancing energetic movement and elemental qualities (earth, air, fire, wind, and space). This is based on Traditional Thai Healing philosophy rather than Western conceptions of anatomy, physiology, and pathology. Most table massage are derived from Swedish techniques.

do i need to take my shirt off?

Typically no - most Thai Massage is received fully-clothed on a futon-like mat on the floor, but some techniques may require temporarily disrobing specific parts of the body. Your practitioner will keep you appropriately covered and allow you to re-clothe once these specific techniques are completed. Some “Table Thai” practitioners may practice more like a Swedish massage therapist, allowing the client to disrobe while performing skillful draping with sheets and towels. For your sessions with Moving Meditations, you do not need to disrobe.

No! Thai Yoga is the Thai style of Yoga, involving stretching, exercising, and some self-massage. Thai Massage is the the Thai style of bodywork, involving passively receiving massage and assisted stretching techniques. There is definitely a connection between the two, as they both are rooted in Traditional Thai Healing understanding of the body, mind, spirit. Some people intentionally call Thai Massage “Thai Yoga,” often in an effort to circumvent local laws and regulations for massage therapy.

Rissa offers both Thai Massage and Thai Yoga!

is “thai yoga” the same as “thai massage?”

Thai Massage helps introduce a novel stimulus of dynamic touch and assisted movement/stretching to the body. In addition to the physical benefits of Thai Massage, your session will also provide a safe, supportive environment with a caring practitioner, in alignment with Thai Healing principles. Because most people in the US don’t get enough physical activity, it is more likely that adding more exercise to your routine will give you better improvements in your health than adding massage. Because of this, it is recommended to focus on physical activity with Thai Massage as a secondary intervention for improved health, reduced stress, and better movement.

will Thai massage help solve my problem?

Book online at https://movingmeditations.setmore.com/ ⬅️

You can also call, text, or email if you have any questions - but booking online will give you more control of your session (you can cancel or reschedule up to 24 hours in advance by clicking the link in your confirmation email). Booking online will also give you both email and text reminders!

How do i book a session?

You may cancel or reschedule up to 24 hours in advance. Cancelling within 24 hours (except in case of emergency) means you will be charged for the full cost of the session. This is because by scheduling a session you are preventing other clients from booking at that time, and within 24 hours it is very unlikely Rissa will be able to fill the time. Left unchecked, last-minute cancellations will bankrupt a practitioner! It is that serious.

What is the cancellation policy?

Yes! While Rissa offers Couples Thai Massage workshops occasionally, you are more than welcome to book a private Couples’ session where you will learn customized Thai Massage techniques you can practice at home with your partner. In a private session, you will also have the opportunity to receive some treatment from Rissa herself as she demonstrates techniques for you and your partner.

can i book a private couples thai massage lession?

Yes! Rissa offers monthly popup yoga classes, as well as one-on-one strength training for those experiencing pain, for those recovering from surgery or injury, or for those with special conditions who require a bit more specialized guidance. Check out Slow and Steady Strength for more information!
